How to Know If Your Copper Needs Retinning

  • Dark or visible copper exposure, often reddish-brown in color
  • Tin worn through, most commonly in the center of pans where stirring occurs
  • Rough, pitted, or uneven cooking surfaces
  • Scratches deep enough to expose the copper underneath
  • Food sticking in areas where the tin has worn away
  • Uneven heating patterns
Normal timeline: Most copper cookware needs to be retinned every 10 to 20 years, depending on frequency of use and care.

Retinning Process

Our retinning process uses traditional hand-wiped tin application. We use the same hot-tin methods that have restored copper cookware for centuries worldwide.
  1. Detailed Inspection
Each piece is examined for damage and structural issues. We photograph and document its condition before work begins.
  2. Surface Preparation
The interior is thoroughly cleaned using specialized techniques to remove residue, oxidation, and old tin. The copper surface is prepared to properly accept the new tin lining.
  3. Hand-Wiped Tin Application
The tin is heated and hand-wiped onto the copper interior in thin layers. This traditional method creates a superior molecular bond compared to electroplating. The tin layer is built to optimal thickness through multiple passes.
  4. Dent Removal and Repairs (If Needed)
Minor dents are carefully worked out. Loose handles are resecured. Structural repairs are made to extend the life of your cookware.
  5. Polishing and Finishing
The exterior is polished to a brilliant mirror finish. A final inspection ensures every piece meets both your standards and ours before it is returned to you.
